Effects of Racing Surface and Turn Radius on Fatal Limb Fractures in Thoroughbred Racehorses

نویسندگان

چکیده

North American Thoroughbred racing is conducted on three types of surfaces—dirt, turf, and synthetic. The tracks are oval, races run counterclockwise. loading right left limbs expected to differ as a function turn radius, banking, surface, gait asymmetry. Hind forelimbs also have different functions related propulsion turning, respectively. This study uses the Equine Injury Database for race starts from 1 January 2009 through 31 December 2014, compare injury rates across participating racetracks. data limited catastrophic injuries in which horses died or were euthanized due fracture within 72 h start race. Overall lower turf synthetic surfaces pattern limb vs. fore hind different. Regardless more likely fracture. Dirt showed higher forelimb compared other surfaces, experience fatal than dirt. but only dirt surfaces.

The effect of selected factors on length of racing career in Thoroughbred racehorses in Poland

The aim of the study was to develop a profile, and to examine factors affecting the length of the racing career of 1759 Thoroughbreds (872 males and 887 females) in Poland. Product-limit survival analysis and Cox proportional hazards model was used to determine whether sex, age at first race, month of birth, trainer and performance at first season (money earned and number of starts) were associ...

A cohort study of racing performance in Japanese Thoroughbred racehorses using genome information on ECA18.

Using 1710 Thoroughbred racehorses in Japan, a cohort study was performed to evaluate the influence of genotypes at four single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on equine chromosome 18 (ECA18), which were associated in a previous genome-wide association study for racing performance with lifetime earnings and performance rank. In males, both g.65809482T>C and g.65868604G>T were related to perform...

Epidemiology of racing injuries in Thoroughbred racehorses with special reference to bone fractures: Japanese experience from the 1980s to 2000s

This report describes the descriptive epidemiology of racing fractures that occurred from the 1980s to 2000s on racetracks of the Japan Racing Association (JRA). The incidence of racehorse fractures during flat racing was approximately 1-2%. Fractures occurring during a race are more likely to occur in a forelimb. Fractures mostly occur at the third and fourth corners of oval tracks and on the ...

The effect of age on the racing speed of Thoroughbred racehorses

The running performance of Thoroughbred racehorses has been reported to peak when they are between 4 and 5 years old. However, changes in their racing speed by month or season have not been reported. The purposes of this study were to reveal the average racing speed of Thoroughbreds, and observe changes in their average speed with age. The surveyed races were flat races on turf and dirt tracks ...
